Nyssara

The Flame

What will you feed it?

Passion Lust Desire Creation Destruction

Nyssara is also called The Velvet Hunger, Whisper of Want, The Gilded Temptation, She Who Awakens, She Who Unbinds, The Mother of Desire, The Burning Heart, The Flame That Creates, and The Flame That Destroys.

Divine Nature

Nyssara governs desire made manifest. She is passion before reason, lust before restraint, ambition before consequence, creation before form, and destruction before silence. Her ancient name is understood to mean “She Who Awakens the Flame.”

She does not command mortals; she does not need to. She places a burning desire directly within the heart and allows the mortal to decide what to do with it. A lover will cross kingdoms, an artist will sacrifice comfort, a ruler will burn a kingdom to keep a crown, a mother will walk into death for her child. The Flame does not judge these acts; it merely reveals them.

To Nyssara, a life without desire is not truly a life — to want nothing is to become nothing. That which burns cannot remain unchanged.

“What do you want?”

The Two Faces of the Flame

The title The Flame carries her central theological paradox: the flame that creates is the flame that destroys. Her temples represent this duality through two pillars.

  • The Flame of Creation — the tongue that rises upward, destroying empty possibility to bring forth art, life, kingdoms, and beauty
  • The Flame of Ruin — the tongue that curls downward, generating emptiness, which in turn creates new possibility

The faithful hold that lust, passion, ambition, creation, freedom, and destruction are not separate fires, but different faces of the same Flame. To deny desire is to let it fester in darkness; to acknowledge it is the first step toward mastering its power.

“Feed the Flame.”

Virtues of the Faithful

Tenets of Nyssara

  • Do not deny the Flame — a desire denied festers in darkness
  • Desire is not shame — what matters is your choice of action
  • Feed what you would become — the Flame grows indiscriminately
  • Create without fear — bring forth what does not yet exist
  • Burn what must end — make room for the new
  • Choose your surrender — freedom lies in chosen surrender
“That which burns cannot remain unchanged.”

Shadow of the Hunger

Sacred Symbol

Nyssara’s sacred symbol is a living flame enclosed within an open circle. The circle represents the eternal cycle of desire, creation, destruction, and renewal, while the flame never touches the boundary — contained, but never imprisoned. A restrained flame becomes useless, but an uncontrolled flame consumes everything. Her secondary symbol is the velvet flame, representing pleasure, luxury, and temptation.

“Do not extinguish the Flame.”

Flamebearers — Priesthood

Priests and priestesses of Nyssara are called Flamebearers. They are not asked to live in abstinence; they are required to understand desire as lovers, artists, warriors, courtesans, craftsmen, or scholars. They counsel through creative and emotional blocks, officiate marriages and unions of passion, guide personal transformations, and keep an eternal sanctuary flame that is never permitted to die.

  • Keepers of the Flame — highest priests, who teach that none can guide another through fire without mastering their own
  • Velvet Speakers — priests adept in persuasion, seduction, diplomacy, and reading mortal desire

The greatest lesson of the Velvet Speakers is: “Know what you want before you ask another to surrender.” The faithful gather for the Awakening Flame, the Night of Want — “What did your desire cost you?” — and the Gilded Flame, where ambition is displayed and declared.
